About Us
Purpose
Delta Sigma Pi is a professional fraternity organized to foster the study of business in universities; to encourage scholarship, social activity and the association of students for their mutual advancement by research and practice; to promote closer affiliation between the commercial world and students of commerce, and to further a higher standard of commercial ethics and culture and the civic and commercial welfare of the community.
History
Delta Sigma Pi was founded at New York University, School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance on November 7, 1907 by Harold Valentine Jacobs, Alexander Frank Makay, Alfred Moysello and Henry Albert Tienken. In January of 1914, the first Grand Chapter Congress was held. The first Central Office of Delta Sigma Pi was established in 1924 at 222 West Adams St., Chicago, Illinois with H. G. “Gig” Wright as Grand President. In 1928, Delta Sigma Pi became one of the charter members in the newly founded Professional Interfraternity Conference. By the early 1950s, the Fraternity had over 90 chapters and over 30,000 initiated brothers, despite major setbacks throughout the Great Depression and World War II; and in the Fall of 1956, Central Office relocated to 330 South Campus Avenue in Oxford, Ohio and was dedicated to H. G. “Gig” Wright for his decades of service. On November 7, 1975, the Board of Directors authorized the chapters to immediately initiate qualified female business students in response to the implementation of Title IX of the Higher Education Act. The ratification of coeducational membership was passed by Grand Chapter Congress in 1977. In 1981, the 200th chapter was installed at Missouri State University. The 150,000th member was initiated in 1991, and in 1998, the Fraternity initiated its 200,000th member. As of Novermber 2007, 220,000 members had been initiated with 194 active chapters of the 265 chapters that had been installed.
